ABOUT FAST DRUM SONGS

At 150 BPM and above the difficulty stops being what to play and becomes whether your hands can do it for three minutes. These are the punk records, the thrash records, the hardcore records, and the handful of rock songs that are simply quicker than anybody remembers. Everything here can be taken down to a quarter speed and walked back up.

Beginner, intermediate and advanced parts are all here on the source catalogue's own difficulty tiers, with advanced the largest of them. Most of the shelf has not been through that ranking at all, which is true of two thirds of this catalogue and is why the difficulty filter is something you turn on rather than something applied for you. Hundreds of hours of playing at the tempos written, all told.

A good place to start is "04 Six Feet Under" at 150 BPM, the slowest of the songs on this shelf at 150 BPM and above, or "Proposition Tease" at 10 bars, the shortest. Every chart here downloads as sheet music, tab, MIDI and MusicXML if you would rather read it away from the screen.

QUESTIONS

How do I build up speed on drums?

Not by playing fast. You find the slowest tempo at which the bar is clean, play it there until it is boring, then move up in small steps and drop back the moment it stops being clean. That is what the practice course on every chart here does for you: it picks the tempo ladder off the bar’s own difficulty and holds you at each rung until you have played it right.

Do fast songs need a double pedal?

Some do, most do not. Plenty of what is here is fast eighths on one foot, which is a stamina problem rather than an equipment one. Each chart lists the kit the part actually uses, so you can see before you start whether your kit can play it.

How fast are fast drum songs?

From 150 to 380 BPM, averaging 179. That number is where the record sits, not where you have to play it: every chart here runs at any tempo from a quarter of the written one upwards, with the recording following where it can.

What is the slowest and the fastest of them?

"04 Six Feet Under" by Shhh at 150 BPM is the slowest, and "Liminal Cypher" by Arch at 380 BPM is the quickest. Neither number is a wall: every chart here plays at any tempo from a quarter of the written one upwards, so the fast ones are learnable at the speed of the slow ones.

Which one is quickest to learn?

"Proposition Tease" by SIlver Liquid is the shortest part on this shelf at 10 bars. Short is not the same as easy, but a short part is one you can get all the way through in a sitting, and playing something end to end teaches more than looping the first eight bars of something longer.
